Leigh Jeanotte, director of University of North Dakota’s American Indian Student Services for 40 years, is this year’s recipient of the Paul V. Boswell Community Scholar Award.
Jeanotte was presented the award at the annual UND Stone Soup Civic Engagement Awards Program and Reception on Nov. 18. The award is made by the UND Center for Community Engagement, UND Multicultural Student Services, and the UND American Indian Studies Department.
The Boswell Community Scholar Award recognizes an individual for character that embodies the idea of community, an ethic of care for others, a motivation for social change, and an interest in the success of all students. The award is given in memory of Paul Boswell, who served as director of the UND Native Media Center before his death in 2006.
A member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, Jeanotte has been recognized for his recruitment and support of American Indian students at UND. His assistance with grants and faculty research has provided educational opportunities and promoted cultural understanding. Most recently he has worked with a project “In Our Words: Native Impressions” by UND Art & Design faculty members Lucy Ganje and Kim Fink. Jeanotte holds three degrees from UND, including a doctorate in educational administration.
The awards event, sponsored by the UND Center for Community Engagement, also included recognition of UND faculty, students, departments, and community partners for their exemplary community-university academic work. UND First Lady Marcia Kelley and Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown presented the annual civic engagement awards.
